Tortuga Island

Under Leclerc and under Rochambeau, this island, inhabited in that day by a few miserable fishermen, presented the traveler with a picturesque glance. Orange trees, interlacing their branches laden with fruit above the paths which crossed the island in all directions, gave one a fragrant shade that protected it against the heat of a murderous sun.
